3月はバタバタして更新がすっかり遅れましたが、
５号機のシートポスト一体化（末四郎撮影）と、
１４号機のフレーム製作をレポート。
Reports on Mahogany Bike No. 5 modified to integrate the seat post with the seat tube and new Mahogany Bike No. 14 having a small sized frame

自転車関係のイベントによく参加し、あちこちのブログに登場する５号機。
このたび、晴れてシートポスト一体化改造を受けました。
Mahogany Bike No. 5 frequently takes part in bicycle-relating events, and appears in various blogs.
This time, Bike No. 5 had an operation by Sueshiro to integrate the seat post with the seat tube.
シートチューブとシートポストを１本のチューブで形成し、弾力性を高めた。完成した直後、２月２２日に末四郎が撮影。
The seat tube and the seat post were formed with a new mahogany lamination tube, and its elasticity was improved. These photographs were taken by Sueshiro on February 22, 2012.

一体化により、サドルにかかる体重でフレームを変形させる傾向が増し、フレームによるアシストが増す。
５号機オーナーは「走りがさらになめらかになった、振動がさらに減った、
明らかに速くなった」と喜ばれているそうです。
The integration increased the elastic deformation of the mahogany frame by body weight put on the saddle,
and the power assistance by the frame increased.
"Running became smoother and faster, the vibration decreased obviously", the owner said with pleasure.

シートバインダーがなくなったことにより、フレームの艶めかしさもアップ。
The seat binder was removed, and charms of the frame increased.

サドルの高さはやぐらのスベーサ高さで調整。調整幅は小さくなるが、
その分、オーナーのためだけの存在に。
The saddle height can be adjusted by the thickness of a mahogany spacer.
Although adjustable range became small, this bike became the one only for its owner.

これからはますます、オーナーが乗り回すことになりそうです。
気さくなオーナーですから、見かけたら話しかけてみてください。
Hereafter, the owner seems to ride this bike around more frequently than before.
The owner is a sociable person, so please easily speak to the owner when you happen to meet Mahogany Bike No. 5.

大切に乗り回されてこそ、幸せな自転車。
The bicycles are happy all the more because they are driven around by their owners.

さて、２月２５日に１４号機のフレームを取材。
Well, I covered the frame of Mahogany Bike No. 14 on February 25, 2012.

14号機はSANOMAGIC初めてのコンパクトなフレーム。トップチューブがかなり傾斜している。
The frame of Bike 14 is the first compact frame of SANOMAGIC. The top tube inclines considerably.

かわいいフレームで、今後は女性オーナーにも適用していく予定。
This small and lovely frame geometry will also be applied to ladies bike in the future.

フレームのサイズが小さい分、これまでより断面積を小さくして、
適切なフレームアシストが得られるように工夫しているとのこと。
Because the frame size is small, the sectional area of each section of the frame is
reduced to produce optimal power assistance by appropriate frame elasticity.

このジオメトリーでどのようなフレームアシストが得られるかは、末四郎にも未経験の領域。
Even Sueshiro cannot correctly estimate the frame-assist effect to be produced by this frame geometry.

フロントフォークの断面も菱形に近い形状とし、弾性を高めるため断面積を減らしている。
The sectional shape of the front fork became like diamond to decrease its sectional area.

二つ指を着いて、よろしくお願いします、なんて古風な感じですね。

この辺の内部構造は複雑でノウハウの塊。
外観のシンプルさにだまされてはいけません。
Internal structure around here is very complex and a mass of knowhows.
It is difficult to imagine it from the simple appearance.

14号機のケーブル金具。末四郎が自分で削りだしている。
Sueshiro makes even cable fittings by machining by himself.

もっとも荷重がかかるボトムブラケット周辺。
積層方法、肉厚、材質選択、形状などノウハウだらけ。
その上で、14号機オーナーに最適化されています。最初は予想最適値よりもやや太めに形成し、
試乗後、アシストが足らなければ、削って調整する。
The bottom bracket portion on which the heaviest load to be applied.
Its shape, thickness, selection of mahogany, and lamination method are all knowhows,
and are optimized for the owner. Sueshiro makes mahogany frames a little thicker than expected at first,
and he will carefully shave the frame to obtain maximum performance.

右太ももの内側にはSANOMAGICの刻印
SANOMAGIC engraved on the right thigh.

左太ももの内側にはオーナーへの忠誠を誓う、WRD-14の刻印。
"WRD-14" engraved in the left thigh pledges loyalty to the owner.

これから日光を浴びて、マホガニーの全身が赤く染まっていきます。
The whole body of the frame will be gradually dyed in mahogany red as it basks in sunlight.

シートポストとフレームは、実は、特殊な木造船技術を用いて弾性的に結合されており、
貫通部を境に逆位相で弾性変形する。
The seat tube and the frame are united in elastic manner by using a special wood-shipbuilding technique,
and upper and lower parts of the seat tube elastically transforms
toward the opposite direction on the border of the penetration part

末四郎は積層の配色にもこだわっている。
サドルの断面が３色になっているでしょ、これは３段階に色をそろえて積層しているため。
シートポストの断面も、交互に濃淡を並べてある。
Sueshiro carefully determines the color arrangement of laminated mahoganies.
The saddle has three color layers and each layer is made of many thin mahogany plates of the same color.
On the other hand, the section of the seat post has alternately arranged light and shade colors.

この点ひとつとってみても、末四郎の後に、
このような木造自転車を作れる人間は、地球に２度と現れないと確信します。
I am convinced that another man who can build such mahogany bikes never appears on the earth after Sueshiro.

１４号機のサドルも頷いて同意。
Nodding.

無造作に積まれたカンパニョーロスーパーレコード。全て１４号機に搭載。
Campagnolo Super Records casually piled up will be installed in Mahogany Bike No. 14.

実際のスロープはこの位になる。末四郎も出来映えに満足の様子。
The actual slope becomes like this. Sueshiro shows satisfaction in the quality.

14号機のリム。前輪は40mm、後輪は32mmのディープリム。オーナーの用途を分析して最適化した。
Mahogany rims of Bike 14. The front rim has a height of 40 mm, and the rear rim has a height of 32 mm.
These were determined based on the owner's purpose.

スポークの本数も前後で異なっている。全てはオーナーのため。何気なく凄いでしょう。
The numbers of spokes are also different between the front and the rear. All are for the owner.



まるで無垢の木材みたいですが、これで10数層～20層ほどの積層。
積層面もつなぎ目も見えないほど、高精度に接合されている。
重要なのは接合面の平滑さと接合方法。
SANOMAGICリムの強度はここから生まれている。

Although they seem to be solid natural wood, about 10 to 20 of mahogany layers were laminated.
Lamination boundaries and connection of plate ends are hardly observed because of a precise laminating technique.
The strength of the SANOMAGIC mahogany rims derives from this technique.

さて、番外編としてSANOMAGIC近くに生まれた観光名所、
東京ゲートブリッジをご紹介。
撮影は3月4日の午後4時頃です。
Well, I introduce a new tourist spot near SANOMAGIC, Tokyo Gate Bridge.

東京ゲートブリッジは自転車で渡ることはできない。
若洲海浜公園内の歩行者用タワーから歩行者のみ登れます。
Bicycles cannot pass the Tokyo gate bridge.
Only pedestrian can go up to it through an elevator tower in the Wakasu Kaihin Koen Park.

力のこもったタワー。この先に何があるのか、胸が高鳴る。
外側の螺旋階段の他に、中央にエレベータがある。無料です。
Powerful appearance of the tower.
In addition to outer spiral staircase, there is an elevator in the center thereof.

タワーを登ったところ。夕方近くなので人は多くない。上る前にトイレへ行くこと。
The top of the tower. There were not so many people because it was about 4 o'clock.
Please go to a rest room before going up.

気持ちよく散歩できる。風が強いと大変かも。前方に東京湾埋め立て地が見えます。
Confortable stroll.

白灯台、赤灯台がこんな風に見えるとは。
白灯台には以前、末四郎とともにカサゴ釣りに来たことがあります。あの時は釣れたなあ。

橋の中央から見える東京。右にスカイツリー、左に東京タワーが見えます。
妙に歩くけれど、素敵なスポットでした。なお、歩道は5時で閉鎖なので、注意。
