2012.06.23 SANOMAGIC Wooden Bicycle

マホガニーバイク15号機に試乗するため、梅雨の晴れ間に取材。
フレームはやや堅めながら素晴らしい乗り心地です。前回の取材から1週間でオーディオ環境が格段に進化して驚く。
近日中に、ピアニストの西村由紀江さんがマホガニースピーカーの試聴に来られるそうで、大変なことになってきました。
Test ride of Mahogany Bike No. 15.
Although its frame was made a little firmer than the estimated optimal, Bike 15 offered me splendid ride.
I was surprised to see audio equipments in SANOMAGIC have evolved remarkably from those of the last week.
This is a preparation for welcoming a pianist, Ms. Yukie Nishimura, who will come to SANOMAGIC in a few days to listen Mahogany Speakers.

オーディオ設備が先週から何か変わっているぞ。
I immediately felt something has been changed in the audio equipments.

見慣れないデスクに、見たことのない機材がぞろりと並んだ。
Unfamiliar apparatuses arranged on an unfamiliar desk

なぜここにコンピューターが。実はこれが新しい音源です。
西村由紀江さんが来ると知った音楽専門家の方から、そんな設備じゃピアニストの耳には不足だ、これを使えと、スピーカー以外の設備一式を譲り受けた。
This computer is the new sound source. Sueshiro obtained these equipments including the computer from an audio specialist at a really low price.
The audio specialist said that previous equipments were insufficient for the ears of the professional pianist, and offered his precious apparatuses to Sueshiro.

そのうちのひとつ、200V医療用安定化電源。アンプの電源として使用。もっとも高音質になるそうです。
新木場の100V電源はノイズが多くて話にもならないとのこと。
Among those, this is a 200-volts stabilizing supply for medical equipments. This supplies electric power to amplifiers.

これも譲り受けた真空管アンプ。内部は手作りだそうです。
ドイツ製の真空管を使用、電源オンから３時間で本来の音質を発揮するとのこと (-_-;)ヤレヤレ。扇風機で冷やされてます。
This is a handmade vacuum-tube amp. The vacuum tubes are made in Germany.
It is said that it provides the highest sound quality after three hours from the power-on. (-_-;)

ほのかに赤く光る真空管。青く光るのは発光ダイオード。古くて新しい技術のようだ。
Red glowing of vacuum tubes, and blue light from LEDs. This is a mixture of old and new technologies.

真空管アンプの前段となるDACとプリアンプ。DACがコンピューターにUSB接続されています。
コンピューターには楽曲ストレージとして２ＴＢの日立製外付けハードディスク。全ての装置が専門家の選択による。
A DAC and a preamp are connected between the computer and the vacuum main amp.

真空管アンプの出力はマホガニースピーカーへ。新旧ごちゃごちゃのようですが、これが現時点で最高音質のコンビネーションらしいです。
The output of the tube amp activates mahogany speakers. The audio specialist said this is the best combination at present.

さっそく試聴。とろけるような音楽が流れ出します。前回の金色ツイーターも音が出すぎるとの理由で、黒いものに変更。
ツイーターは２０ｋＨｚ以上に設定され、耳をつけても鳴っているのかわかりません(歳？)。これでいいそうです。難しいねえ。
Captivating sound began to flow from the mahogany speakers.
Black tweeters are set to output only over 20 kHz sound. I could not hear the high note from the black tweeters. (due to my age?)

細かいことはよくわかりませんが、音はとても自然、聞くととろけるようで、スピーカーから音が出ているのか、後ろの壁全体から音が出ているのかわからない。
音質の頂点に近づいているようです。
Though I do not know the detail, the sound became more natural. It seems to have approached the top of sound quality.

マホガニースピーカーは、購入した人から口コミや試聴で広がり、注文がどんどん増加。これらは全て、弾性支持スピーカーになる予定。
Mahogany speakers are being spread by word of mouth from their owners.

末四郎はさらに、小型スピーカーでも音質を高める画期的なアイデアを発案し、現在、試作機で実験中。まだ秘密です。
Sueshiro got a new idea to improve sound quality even by a small mahogany speaker box, and is now testing the invention.

背面も正真正銘のマホガニー単板。スピーカーは積層していません。音については、積層より単板のほうが響きがよいとのこと。
本物のマホガニーとはいえない、アフリカンマホガニーや他の木材の単板は、自然乾燥でやがて割れるそうです。それが従来、単板スピーカーが作られない理由。

Sueshiro says single mahogany plates sound sweeter than laminated plates do.
"But, single wood plate except real mahogany will be cracked by drying. That's why wooden speakers made by single wood plate are not being sold", Sueshiro said.

撮影と来客で慌ただしいSANOMAGICです。
Today's SANOMAGIC is busy about television coverage and visitors.

特番にも出演する7号機。車の後を時速50km/h以上で走行するシーンもあります。迫力で見てて怖い。
そのビデオは、撮影した金子カメラマンの許可を得て、近日中に、このホームページでも公開しますよ。
Mahogany Bike 7 of Mr. Chomei. Global Navi Front broadcasted a scene of Mahogany Bike 7 running at over 50km/h.

これもテレビ取材された。マホガニー製の佐野家結婚指輪。約25年前に末四郎が奥さんに贈った、マホガニー積層体の指輪。
This mahogany ring was also broadcasted. Sueshiro made this ring for his wife 25 years ago.

鉋で削ったごく薄いマホガニーの薄膜をくるくる巻いて固めたもの。金属に匹敵する強度がある。
当時は貴金属の指輪が買えなかったので自作したとのこと。魔力があるかもね。
A thin mahogany film shaved by a Japanese-style plane was laminated to form a ring.
The ring has a strength comparable to a metal ring.

末四郎が30年以上前に作ったマホガニーのワイングラス。マホガニーの赤化で赤紫色になっている。
SANOMAGICのマホガニー製品は、全て、最終的にこの色になります。凄いね。
Wineglass made by Sueshiro more than 30 years ago. All the mahogany products of SANOMAGIC will finally become this color.

さて、今日は晴れているので、やっと15号機を外で撮影できます。15号機を8方向からご覧ください。

砂がついているのは、テスト走行の証。末四郎は今日も35kmほどテスト走行したそうです。
自分でも最低200km乗りこんで、安全性と性能を確かめます。
Because Sueshiro drove Bike 15 for 35km today, sand was adhered to the mahogany frame.

15号機のサドル。サドル自体は弾性変形しないですが、自転車全体で振動を吸収するため、お尻はとても楽です。
The mahogany saddle of Mahogany Bike No. 15. The saddle itself does not elastically deform.
But, because it is supported by an elastic frame, vibration to hip decreases.

1年くらい走ってオーナーが慣れたら、必要に応じてフレームを削り直す。今のところこの状態が最適。
When the owner becomes accustomed to running with Bike 15 after one year,
Sueshiro will decide whether or not shaving of frame is necessary.

トップチューブ、ヘッドチューブ、ダウンチューブをつなぐリブは、従来よりも後ろへ延びている。
The rib that connects the top tube, the head tube, and the down tube, has been extended backward than those of previous mahogany bikes.

艶々のバルブキャップ。

15号機の次は、いよいよ小径車2号機（マホガニースポーク）を製作する予定。そのオーナーＫさんの現在の愛機、アンパンマン号。
After the completion of Bike 15, Sueshiro will make second small wheel bike with mahogany spokes. This is the current bicycle of the owner, Mr. K.

Ｋさんは、とても手先の器用な人で、SANOMAGICから持ち帰ったマホガニーの端材からいろいろなものを自作している。
Mr. K is very skillful. He made many parts using mahogany pieces received from SANOMAGIC.

アンパンマン号のアンパンマン。
An-pan-man face.

ハンドルは既にマホガニー化している（もちろん末四郎作成）。STIレバーの上面にマホガニー板がはめ込まれている（これはオーナーによる）。
The handle was already exchanged to a mahogany handle by Sueshiro. Mr. K embedded small mahogany plates on the tops of STI brakes.

スピードメーターとライトの外面に、Kさんがマホガニー板を張った。これは難しい加工ですよね。
Mr. K covered a speed meter and a light with mahogany thin plates.

シフトケーブルの末端につけられたフラグ。マホガニー製でちゃんと波打っています。小さすぎて誰も気づいてくれない、とのこと。
でも、ぷらぷら揺れながら走る姿を想像すると、ユーモラス。
A small mahogany flag attached on the top of the shift cable. It is waving!

ブレーキレバーの末端はイカリ型。芸が細かいな。(-_-;)
A small mahogany anchor is attached to the end of rear brake wire.

実は、マホガニー製のバルブキャップは、Kさんが最初に発案。
Mahogany valve caps were invented first by Mr. K.

これらのフラッグは船で使う「UW旗」で、「御安航を祈る」という意味だそうです。フラッグの下には、なんとマホガニーのケーブルカバー。
These flags are "UW flags" and it means "I pray for your safety sailing", the owner said. Below the UW flags, a mahogany sheath is attached on a brake wire.

ボトルケージにもマホガニーが三カ所使われている。
Three mahogany parts are used in a bottle cage.

こんなところにも。全て、ナイフと紙やすりで作っているそうです。やりますねえ。
Caps for crank levers. Mr. K made these mahogany parts only using a knife and sand papers.

Kさんがご自分でペイント。2号機に対しても、きっとKさんは木造化をさらに進めるでしょうね。その過程も楽しみです。
Mr. K will reform even the mini-wheel mahogany bike by himself. I look forward to such reforms.

視線を感じて振り返ると、SANOMAGICの様々な変遷を、十字架がじっと見つめている。
When I felt somebody's eyes and turn around, the Cross was watching the vicissitude of SANOMAGIC.

この先、ここで何が生まれていくのか、実は神様しか知らないのです。
Only the god knows what arises hereafter.
